The present school building, of the Castana Consolidated School, was built during the years of 1935 and 1936. $45,000.00 in bonds were sold and a grant of $36,818.00 was approved by the Public Works Administration of the United States Government.
The Architects and Engineers were Beuttler & Arnold of Sioux City, Iowa.
B. E. Short presented a bid of $75,598.00 for contracting. M. M. Farewell was hired to be supervisor of the construction of this new school building.
The first classes in the new building started September 7, 1936. The school board members at this time were Lloyd Lock as President, Donald Masters, Byron M Robbins, C. D. Riley, R. B. Stephenson and Herman Nutt as Secretary.
The bus drivers were Russell McDonald, Maynard McDonald, Elmer Riley, C. E. Nutt, Nels Nelson, Lawrence Hieber, Herman Bouslough and H. G. Payne.
The first custodian of the new school was W. E. "Kesty" Kesterson. Other custodians, throughout the years have been; Elmer Riley, H. A. Westberg, Beck Larsen Fern Larsen, Ingar Larsen, Charles Merritt, William Hall, Allen Jordan, Melvin Crist, Gayle Sisson, Gayland Utterback and Clarence Burkhart.
In November of 1936 a public sale was held to sell the old school house. It was sold to the town of Castana for $1,000.00. The building was torn down and the usable lumber was used to build the present town hall.
In 1954, the school name was changed from "Castana Consolidated" to "Castana Community School".
About this same time the school rented the building formerly known as Martin Peterson's Grocery Store, for the use of Farm Shop classes. The Farm Shop room at the school was then remodeled and equipped for a Hot Lunch Program. The first cooks were Alma Ulven, Uneta Sammons, Ruth Lynn and Janette Simpson was a substitute cook.
A new addition was built, on the present school building, in 1958 at a cost of about $54,000.00. This was used as a Farm Shop and Ag Building. It is now the Hot Lunch and Music Room.
Reorganization was being talked about in the late 1950's and later boundary lines were drawn for part of the district going to West Monona.
